We love socks

Favourite socks 😊

All the socks above were gifts from students, and Dr Zonga is eternally grateful as he has a thing for socks...

Scenario

Dr Zonga has to get up early for work.  He goes to get a pair of socks from the drawer in the bedroom, but it's completely dark and with others still asleep, he can't turn the light on.

Assumptions

Dr Zonga has 7 pairs of socks. Even though they are brightly coloured, the darkness is absolute and he can't tell one from another.

Questions

1) What is the minimum number of socks Dr Zonga should take so that he definitely has a pair?

2) If Dr Zonga takes 3 socks, what is the probability that he has a pair (and can go to work with the same pattern sock on each foot)?

Think you've got the answer?

The solution was broadcast LIVE on Instagram, 5pm (CET), 2nd April 2021. @Dr_Zonga
